Broadcom wireless card is not working in Ubuntu 11.04 [SOLVED]

PrintE-mail

Articles - Computer Tips & Tricks

I have network card "Broadcom Corporation BCM4311". And its been working fine out of the box in all previous versions until now in Ubuntu 11.04.

To know your netword card, type below in console. Then look for Network Controller: and the card's name right behind it.

For me this worked,

  1. In System>Administration>Synaptic package manager, search for "bcmwl-kernel-source". Uninstall it if its already installed. In my case, it was not installed.
  2. Search "firmware-b43-installer" and "b43-fwcutter" in Synaptic package manager. Then install them.
  3. Next I saw Additional Drivers icon at the top panel on the screen. Finally, I installed Broadcom STA wireless driver.

ooops... meant to say 'hang on' in last post....
Anyway, it seems to have worked!!!
I can make a connection to a wireless network!
But I am also wired... or I couldn't look for solutions.

I'll try disconnecting the wire and see if it still works on reboot....

ok... I rebooted... from a shut down, not a restart.
IT seemed to take a long time on the Dell splash screen (loading the BIOS?) Upon reboot there is improvement.
From the networking icon on the toolbar I see the system now thinks there is a wireless device but it says it doesn't have firmware. So back to the additional drivers window and try to activate... it took a while but it says it worked... and I have to reboot again.... hand on.....

This did not work for my Dell Precison M4400 with BCM4322

When If first installed 11.04 wireless worked fine. Then I applied some updates including a kernel update and it no longer works.

I've seen other more complicated solutions. This one seemed simpler so I had hope... but it didn't work, It failed when trying to activate the STA wireless driver. Error:
SystemError: installArchives () failed

I didn't reboot.... I'll try that.

I've installed Ubuntu 11.04 on a Compaq nx6325 notebook that has a Broadcom 4311 wireless controller. I've followed this process. The button that controls the wireless function does not light up, but it does turn off the connection used by the USB antenna I'm currently using. Any idea how to get this unit to use the built-in Broadcom device?
